Africa Event Summit
Africa Events Summit

On 18th February 2026, over 60 professionals from across Kenya’s events ecosystem gathered at Argyle Grand Hotel Nairobi Airport for the Africa Events Summit (AES) Nairobi Pre-Summit 2026.

It was fully invite-only.
Intentional.
Curated.

And more importantly, it was necessary.

From event planners and promoters to MCs, DJs, CEOs, artists, production teams and security professionals, the room reflected the diversity, and complexity, of Kenya’s events industry.

The theme guiding the conversation was simple but weighty:

The Past. The Present. The Future.

Setting the Tone: A Strategic Welcome

The day began with arrival, registration, and a steady flow of conversations over mocktails, saxophone ambience, and media banner moments. The space was set deliberately. Premium, structured, and aligned with the level of dialogue expected.

The official session opened under the guidance of MC Ian Muiruri of Rianna Entertainment, who steered the room with clarity and energy.

A welcome note from Mr. Bhupendra Kumar, General Manager of Argyle Grand Hotel Nairobi Airport, reinforced the importance of collaboration between hospitality and event professionals. The venue’s support throughout the day, from service to ambience to hospitality, reflected the standards the industry aspires to uphold.

A Room That Refused to Stay Silent

Moderated by Azeezah Hashim of A2Z Entertainment, the discussion moved quickly beyond surface-level pleasantries.

The format was open floor. And the room did not hold back.

Several recurring themes emerged:

1. Underpayment vs. Value

Artists spoke openly about underpayment. Some questioned whether there should be standard industry rates.

Others pushed back:

“Why complain someone else is being paid more, have you asked yourself what value you bring?”

It was an uncomfortable but necessary tension.

In attendance were artists like Maandy MCs like MC Gogo and DJs including DJ Grauchi, who represent a new generation navigating both opportunity and pressure in the market.

The conversation wasn’t just about money.

It was about professional respect.

2. The Client Dilemma

Another recurring issue:

Clients demanding premium quality on constrained budgets.

Some industry players noted a pattern:

  • Clients opting for lower-cost alternatives
  • Comparing talent solely on price
  • Questioning why one professional charges more than another

This sparked deeper questions:

Is the industry educating clients enough?
Are professionals articulating value clearly?
Should there be baseline standards to protect quality?

3. Fragmentation & Lack of Standards

Perhaps the clearest consensus in the room was this:

The events industry in Kenya lacks a standard baseline of operation.

There are professionals who have trained, built experience and systems.

And there are others who entered the market simply because they had capital, without foundational planning knowledge.

The difference is visible.

Some attendees proposed the idea of a governing structure, a body that would:

  • Establish minimum standards
  • Enforce professional benchmarks
  • Protect both clients and practitioners

Reference was made to regulatory developments suggesting that events industry players may need formal registration and documentation to operate.

Would that clean up the market?
Possibly.

Would it eliminate informal operators?
Debatable.

But the fact that the conversation is happening is progress.

Collaboration vs. Competition

Several participants observed that the industry suffers not from lack of talent, but lack of collaboration.

Event planners working in silos.
Artists competing rather than aligning.
Suppliers duplicating effort instead of building networks.

The Pre-Summit did not produce a formal resolution.

But it did produce something arguably more important:

Shared acknowledgement.

And acknowledgement is the beginning of alignment.

The Keynote: Intentional Industry Building

Africa event summit - Ian Migwi . CEO Billion events

During the official session, Ian Migwi, CEO of Billion Events, delivered the keynote address.

The message was clear:

The Africa Events Summit is not a one-day gathering.
It is a movement toward structure, professionalism and continental visibility.

The Nairobi Pre-Summit was positioned as the foundation for the larger Africa Events Summit 2026, where the conversations begun in this room will evolve into more defined action.

Beyond the Ballroom: The Industry as Community

After the formal session closed, the atmosphere shifted, but the connections deepened.

Cocktail hour brought networking, informal debate, laughter, and continued exchange.

The energy was elevated by DJ MR Gee and a captivating performance from Ruthy Belly Dancer, blending entertainment with elegance.

It was a reminder of what this industry does best:

Create experience.

Partners Who Made It Possible

The Africa Events Summit Nairobi Pre-Summit 2026 was supported by key partners who believe in industry growth:

  • Argyle Grand Hotel Nairobi Airport
  • TakeSix Digital Africa
  • A2Z Entertainment
  • Rianu Entertainment
  • Nomadiq Sounds
  • SoundFusion
  • Tiseh
  • Ruthy Belly Dancer

Each played a role in shaping an environment where conversation could thrive.

What Happens Next?

No formal declaration was signed.

No immediate governing body was formed.

But something important happened:

The room agreed the conversation must continue.

A post-event survey was circulated to capture structured feedback and guide the planning of the main Africa Events Summit later this year.

The direction is clear:

The events industry in Kenya, and across Africa, is ready for alignment.

The Africa Events Summit will continue to provide the platform.

The industry has spoken.
